Painting of the month & Gallery show review
RENEWAL: A Celebration of New Beginnings at Melt Gallery
Each year, Melt Studio & Gallery launches its exhibition season with RENEWAL, the gallery’s annual Juried Group Exhibition celebrating the arrival of spring and the transformative energy that accompanies it. As winter loosens its grip and the landscape awakens with longer days, melting snow, and returning light, artists are invited to reflect on the many meanings of renewal, both in nature and within ourselves.
This year’s exhibition once again demonstrates the remarkable breadth of artistic interpretation inspired by the theme. From intimate reflections on personal growth and healing to vivid depictions of changing landscapes, the exhibition explores rebirth, transformation, and new beginnings through a wide range of artistic voices and mediums.
As usual, I am continually amazed by the diversity of responses to the theme. Artists approach renewal from so many different perspectives—some emotional, some environmental, some symbolic or spiritual. The result is a dynamic exhibition that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable.
Alongside the work of more than 20 Melt roster artists, this year’s juried exhibition also welcomes 40 guest artists from across Canada, including many familiar local artists such as Colin Green, Renee Hiltz, Angela Jane Lavender, Rachel Hardy, Janice Brant, Allen Hirsh, Laurie McLachlan, Liane Kelly, Glen Wallis, Kiersten Eagan, Ed Lehming, and Katie Pereira, to name just a few, creating a vibrant cross-section of contemporary artistic practices. Painting, sculpture, photography, textile work, mixed media, ceramics, and encaustic all come together in an exhibition that reflects the richness and diversity of both our local and national creative community.
The exhibition highlights not only artistic talent, but also the role galleries play as gathering places for connection and cultural exchange. Visitors are encouraged to move through the space slowly, engaging with the artwork and the stories behind it while experiencing the renewed energy that accompanies the beginning of a new gallery season.
Set in Barrack 3 within the historic surroundings of Base31, RENEWAL has become a much-anticipated annual tradition for both artists and collectors. The exhibition offers emerging and established artists an opportunity to exhibit side by side, fostering dialogue between different generations, styles, and artistic approaches.
At its heart, RENEWAL is a celebration of possibility—the promise that comes with change, growth, and the courage to begin again, a sentiment we can all embrace in these changing times.
Renewal runs from May 15th - June 7th. Opening Reception May 16th 1-4 pm with many artists in attendance. For more information go to www.meltstudiogallery.com
