“Curating, meeting, and promoting Canadian artists quickly became a passion I never knew I had.”

In June 2021, I made a life-enhancing change in my art practice—I opened my own gallery in a historic WWII-era barrack. Curating, meeting, and promoting Canadian artists quickly became a passion I never knew I had.

Talk about the right decision at the right time! In January 2022, the site was purchased by PEC Partners, a group of developers who have since embarked on an ambitious revitalization project. Their vision includes the adaptive reuse of many heritage buildings, landscape transformation, and significant investments in placemaking, public art, programming, site activation, and food and beverage experiences.

Melt Studio and Gallery located in Barrack 3 at Base31 is the home to my encaustic working studio. It is also a wonderful, welcoming space where I showcase my work in the gallery space along with a selection of other talented Canadian artists and artisans. Throughout the year we host solo, group and open juried shows.

More About the History of Base31

Previously known as Camp Picton, now as Base31— is Prince Edward County’s hottest new cultural destination. Situated on a 70-acre WWII air training base, Base31 has a rich history dating back to 1940, when it was built as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP). It became home to the Royal Air Force (RAF), where young British, Canadian, and American men trained as combat pilots.

Decommissioned in the 1960s, the site has since evolved into a hub for creativity and innovation. Many of the former barracks are now workspaces for artists, carpenters, and local businesses, fostering a vibrant and dynamic community.

Melt Studio & Gallery is thrilled to be part of this ever-evolving cultural space. Recent additions to Base31 include:

  • A food commissary offering diverse culinary experiences

  • Two renovated music venues: the Pilots Lounge and the Drill Hall

  • Escape Camp Picton, an immersive escape room inspired by wartime history

  • The housing of a Lancaster bomber in one of the hangars

  • A new Airplane Museum, set to open in Summer 2025

This exciting transformation is breathing new life into Base31, blending history, art, and culture into a must-visit destination.
