In this new series I use a different approach to capturing the light of a scene. Due to the electric requirements of the encaustic process, I cannot paint outside en plein air. This new technique allows me to paint outside for at least part of the time, as it involves an underpainting of watercolour and ink. I apply this underlayer outside while looking at my subject, then return to my encaustic studio to apply the wax. Through the process of adding and subtracting the pigmented encaustic medium, I reveal parts of the watercolor painting below. I find the light shines most brilliantly in these pieces.
