Inspired by the many Lakes of Prince Edward County, this body of work entitled “Mystical Lakes” is my quiet celebration of the “the lake” and the symbol of tranquility it represents in my life. I experiment with the atmospheric effects of light and weather on the lake’s surface through the ancient medium of encaustic painting, which consists of fusing layers of oil pigment and wax.

A brief moment is captured as the deer trudges through the deep banks of snow, seemingly unaware of your presence until the brief moment your eyes meet. You both stop in your tracks and wait to see who will break the gaze first. And before you know it, the moment has passed, and you both continue on separate paths.
In this painting, I use a palette of silvery greys and whites with pine tree branches laid heavy with layers of fallen snow. The deer stands deep in the snow, made up of numerous layers of white pigmented wax.

Inspired by the classic fairy tale’ Little Red Riding Hood’ this painting depicts the red figure of the young little red against a cold and desolate backdrop. She is depicted communing with the Grandmother moon, asking for guidance for the journey ahead.
The moon time is considered a time of power. Some indigenous teachings say that when the moon is full, women can ask Grandmother Moon to give them new energy.
Women can ask Grandmother Moon for direction in life, for wisdom, and for help for her children and others. Grandmother Moon can give her healing and balancing energy to women.

You can almost hear the soothing sound of the water falling in this painting. The sound and site of water can have such a calming effect on our psyche. I used the dripping properties of the wax to capture the movement in this piece.

It’s easy to forget in the depths of the cold Canadian winter the beauty of the first snowfall of the season. I always stop, pause and embrace this moment viewed over the lake from my studio window.

The joy of stumbling across a nest in Spring is alwaysa delight. We have a large thick blue spruce in our backyard that acts like a natural skyscraper providing a safe refuge for numerous birds each year.

It’s during those quiet moments of solitude where we recharge. Finding those quiet places can sometimes be hard during our hectic lives. Let this intricately woven nest carved into the yellow wax encourage you to stop and find that place.
A single egg wrapped in the safety of the bird’s nest. Texture and depth are achieved by carefully layering the wax and carving into it’s surface.

Little Red Riding Hood as a mature woman fears not the wolf and walks with confidence towards the forest. I enjoy playing with the foreground and distance in this piece, with the intention of propelling the viewer forward.

The fragility of the egg has always fascinated me. The unborn young tucked away often from view in safe, protective woven cradles. I tried to capture the fleeting moments of this time of solitude in medium of wax using a lightness of hand and palette.

The term “once in a blue moon” refers to how infrequently we have two full moons during a single month or astrological season. The full blue moon’s spiritual meaning will illuminate our hopes and wishes for the future, so it’s a great time to meditate on your personal intentions.
Full moons in astrology are the energetic highpoint of our monthly lunar cycle, so they tend to bring about an overload of emotional climaxes, personal illuminations, and natural conclusions. Because feelings and situations often come to a peak during full moons, they’re great for exhaling anything that’s no longer serving us and making room for fresh energy in our lives.

A winter scene of quiet solitude. The white glowing moon is in harmony with it’s environment. The birch bark glows silently in the moon’s embrace. The palette is minimal, which adds to the simplicity of this painting . The layering of the wax on the birch tree’s bark is carved and gouged right down to the wooden substrate.

I especially love the shades of purples in the sky in this painting. It stands in contrast to Little Red’s cape and the fields of snow.

Something happens when I stand and look at a lake. A calmness comes over me and I become one with the lake. The colours, smells and the lake’s breeze envelop me. My aim in this painting was to recreate that feeling of peacefulness by using a subdued palette and delicately manipulate the wax.

My painting is a vivid reminder of our canoe trip through Algonquin Park in Autumn many years ago. Through the encaustic medium Susan Wallis give her paintings a wonderful dimension and depth to her images. I feel as though I am walking amongst the Canadian trees yet again.

In March of 2020 during the first isolation, I began working on a new series I called "Hope Nests". This series draws from my Polish heritage with the addition of the traditional painted eggs ( Pisanki). This tradition has roots that go back to the 7th century. Easter aligns itself with Spring. A time for new beginnings, growth and most of all, hope.
